Those who have not had the same opportunity

The opportunity to learn has not come equally to all Americans through history. For some generations, access was denied by geography. More insidiously, people have been denied the opportunity simply because of their race. With many things in life, people who have been denied something value it all the more.

Thanks to public education, the USA now has 99% literacy rate. When this photo was taken, the literacy was less than 90%. The adults in this photo are learning to read for the first time. Today, continuing education happens for many reasons-learning a new language or a new hobby or career training.
