Citizenship is one of the key components of our democratic form of government. Every American remembers high school civics class and immigrants must pass a civics course before gaining citizenship. Democracy requiress more than just an understanding of our system of government, however; it also requires an informed electorate.
Public education is profoundly important to meeting that need. An educated people moves freedom forward, and public schools ensure that all people get that education.
This exhibit showcases some images capturing the growth of public education in the United States, from one-room schoolhouses to cyber classrooms, from part-time grammar school students to junior high science experiments.
